Singer-songwriter Hoyt Axton would have celebrated his 75th birthday today (March 25, 1938). Axton was the writer of such well-known songs like “Joy to the World,” a hit for Three Dog Night and “Never Been to Spain,” which was covered by Three Dog Night, Waylon Jennings and Elvis. His first album was released in 1962 and his albums released between 1971 and 1981 are some of my personal favorites. Hoyt suffered a stroke in 1995 and never fully recovered, he died in 1999 at the young age of 61 after suffering a heart attack. Vastly underrated in my book.
